Phoenix Gymnastics Club


Phoenix Gymnastics Club is a men's artistic gymnastics club in Ireland which caters for boys at all levels from 5 years of age upwards. The club is affiliated to Irish Gymnastics and ran on a 100% voluntary basis. Gymnasts from the club have represented Ireland at World Championships, European Championships, North European Championships, Celtic Cup and several other internationals. We currently have six gymnasts on the Irish National Squad and a further five on the national development squad.

Based in South Dublin, Phoenix GC was established in 2004 with the aim of developing and promoting men's artistic gymnastics. We have all six pieces of men's artistic apparatus along with a number of training aids such as a full sized trampoline, mushrooms etc. The club has over 70 members aged from 5 years to adult training from recreational to international levels. We have also hosted gymnasts from overseas who were on extended stay in Ireland. Our gymnasts take part in club, regional, national and international competitions. Additionally we hold a foreign training camp every year.

Seasons in Review

2009/2010 Season - More success for Phoenix gymnasts
The 2009/2010 Competition Season began with Celtic Cup trials in November. Six of our boys (Luke, Robert, David, Shane, John and Leo) were selected on the Celtic Cup Panel. Also in November, Geoff Rellis qualified for floor final at the North European Championships. In December ten of our gymnasts took part in the Salto Open with SIX winning medals. At our Christmas party Robert Farrington was named our Gymnast Of The Year.  In January Robert, David, Shane and Luke were selected on the Irish Celtic Cup team, all turned in great performances in Wales. March saw Phoenix host the Appenzeller Shield where we won 17 medals. Additionally Cormac McGrory won the Appenzeller Shield. Geoff was part of the Irish team at European Championships in April. Robert and Luke took part in the Huelva Cup in Spain in May. At the level 2-4 national Championships hosted by Phoenix GC we won six medals, Rod won gold, Darren and Daniel won silver with Cormac and Seamus winning bronze. The competition season ended with eleven gymnasts taking part and the level 5-8 national Championships where Geoff took silver at Level 8 (senior). See our Media Gallery for event pictures.


2008/2009 Season - Big year for our Juniors
The 2008/2009 competition season kicked off in October with several of our younger gymnasts being selected for the new Dublin squad. Rory travelled to the Yorkshire Open in October and was part of the Irish team at the North Europeans in November. Our annual awards were held in December with John Binchy named Gymnast of  the Year. Robert Farrington made his international debut in March at the Celtic Cup in Wales. In April Phoenix hosted the Appenzeller Shield with the club winning 12 medals and Shane Lyndon winning the Appenzeller Shield. Five of our juniors travel to Cork in May for the Level 5-7 Championships, all performed well with Ciarán wining silver in Level 5 Over 12. The final competition of the season was the Level 2-4 National Championships which Phoenix hosted in May. The boys won 6 medals - Shane won gold; Jani, Adam, Gareth and Conor won silver with Curtis wining bronze. See our Role of Honour page for more details. A good season was rounded off with twelve of the club's gymnasts being selected for our National Squad (four on the elite squads and eight on the development squads).
 

2007/2008 Season - Seniors and Juniors make their mark
2007/2008 was yet another hectic year with our seniors continuing to perform well on the international stage and our juniors making their mark on the national stage. Wayne was part of the Irish team at the World Championships in Stuttgart in September. Geoff and Rory were part of the Irish team at the North European Championships in DCU during October. In December they represented Ireland at the Barbórka Cup international in Poland. Rory and Luke were part of the Irish Celtic Cup team in February. In March Geoff and Rory took part in the London Open. Also in March, The Appenzeller Shield was in held in Phoenix GC with John Binchy winning the Appenzeller Shield, the club winning 15 medals and many of our boys being selected for the new South Dublin Regional Squad. At the Trofeo Internacional de Gimnasia de Huelva in Spain in April, Rory was 4th on Pommels with both Geoff and Rory narrowly missing out on medals on P. Bars. Geoff and Rory both performed well at the Junior European Championships held in Switzerland in early May. Phoenix GC hosted the Level 2-4 national championships on May 25th with John, David and Curtis all winning medals. See our 2008 News Archive page for more details.
 

2006/2007 Season - Another successful year
There were some notable successes in the 2006/2007 season for Phoenix gymnasts across all levels. Wayne & Geoff represented Ireland at North European Championships in September. At National Championships in November the club won 12 medals (2 gold, 2 silver & 8 bronze medals), this included a clean sweep at Level 7.  In December at the Barbórka Cup International in Poland Wayne qualified for finals. The club hosted national squad training in February.  At Celtic Cup in February Geoff, Rory, Hugo & Luke all turned in excellent performances for the Irish Team. In March, at the South Dublin Regional Competition John Fleming won the Appenzeller Shield with the club winning a total of 10 medals. Our seniors finished second at National Team Championships in April. April also saw Wayne turning in a top notch performance for Ireland at The European Championships in Amsterdam. The season was rounded off at NDPs in Newcastle where Owen performed very well. See our roll of honour page for full details.
 

2005/2006 Season - Great season for Phoenix Gymnasts
2005/2006 was a great season for Phoenix gymnasts at international, national and regional levels. Wayne represented Ireland at both European and North-European Championships. Geoff, Hugo and Danny were part of the Irish Celtic Cup Team. Owen and Luke represented Ireland at British NDPs. Our seniors finished second at the National Team Championships. Our junior boys had some notable successes including John and Kieran wining Level 4 National titles at Under 14 and Under 12 respectively. John also won the overall Level 4 National Championships. Brian Leader won the inaugural Appenzeller Shield. Gymnasts from the club also won several other titles and medals at both national and regional competitions. 2004/2005 Season - Phoenix gymnast wins International Gold Medal
International success in our first season! At the 2005 Tournoi International in Belgium, Wayne Healy took Gold in the under 18 competition and Geoff Rellis took Bronze in the under 16 competition. The boys also represented Ireland at both Celtic Cup and NDPs. Congratulations to both. For more details see our 2005 News Archive page. Not to be outdone, Some our younger members won medals in the regional invitational competition becoming our first medal winners at any level.
